Last night (August 29th, 2024) the Black Student Union hosted an incredible gathering of their membership, and invited the student population as well in order to celebrate the new year, and find new community. It was a warm event, with pizza and cake to eat while participants played games and interacted with delegates from student support organizations on campus (you know FAST Fund was there!)
Without question the event lived up to the mission statement of the BSU "The mission and philosophy of Black Student Union organizations should be to help students strive for academic excellence, promote positive images of students across the entire African diaspora and help students become an integral part of a college community and the community at large." and indeed the BSU is proving to come through this year and continue to be a cornerstone of the student body at MATC.
If you are looking at this event and thinking "yes, well that is great for the youth, but I am an adult!" then I would encourage you to think again. This space included people from all walks of life, and even provided a space for the children of students to play games and participate in the warm celebratory atmosphere. Likewise, if you are not a black student, you are welcome! President Valencia Nelson says "The Black Student Union is for any student who is 'down with the brown.'" And just so!
I am looking forward to what they do this year, and if you want to get involved you can by following this link to campus labs.
